Meet a few of the legendary gods and goddesses from inside:
Frey
In ancient times, Nordic kings believed they descended from the gods. Some were the descendants of Odin; others were the descendants of Frey, whose name means “lord.” Vikings would often dedicate their horses and their boars to him as an offering. Frey had a golden boar, which was made by the sons of Ivaldi—the same dwarfs that made Odin’s spear, Gungnir. Frey’s golden boar ran so fast that it flew across the sky.
Odin
Odin was the ruler of the gods because he was the oldest. He was called All-father because he was the father of so many of the younger gods. Odin was also the god of wisdom, poetry, magic, and the runes. His desire to know everything in the world led him to sacrifice one of his eyes in exchange for such wisdom. To learn the runes, he hanged himself on the world tree, stabbed by a spear, without food or water, for nine nights. There was very little he didn’t know—he even knew magic.
Freya
Freya was considered the most beautiful of the goddesses, with golden hair like amber and lips red like blood. The title frua, which is given to women of honor, comes from her name. Freya had many other names, too: Mardol, Horn, Syr, and Gefn. Freya was both a lover and a fighter, and it is said that if you wish to pray for love, you should pray to her. Fierce in battle, she was the Lady of the Shield-maidens and lived in a land called Folkvangar, the army-fields, in her great hall, Sessrumnir. Half of all the slain warriors sat with her there; the other half of the slain warriors sat with Odin in Valhall.
